Hi Cyndi,

You have written and talked a lot about body image and self worth. I am aware that I need to improve the way I feel about myself but I do not know “how” to even begin to accomplish this task.  You have often explained the importance of starting with small steps so I’ve begun to appreciate the parts of my body that I “like” (eyes, hair etc). My specific concern is my belly. I have gained 15 pounds and am proud to be on the road to gradually losing the pounds but every time I look at my belly I feel discouraged. I don’t like it. Can you help me?!

 Hi Patty!

I’m glad you have asked this excellent question! Thank you for recognizing my passion for helping women to improve their body image and self esteem. For purposes of this column and in order to answer your question, we will focus on your initial concern of poor “belly image”. When you hear the word “belly”, what image does it conjure up? Many women automatically squirm in poor “belly image” discomfort – YUCK! I find this response disturbing – the belly is a beautiful part of the female anatomy. Certainly, I encourage you to try to eliminate excess fat for health reasons. However, not everyone can have a six-pack. Although rock-hard abs can look phenomenal, so can a tummy that is firm, toned, and strong with a little bit of a belly. As women, we need to appreciate our personal best differences. I say “as women” because I believe that when it comes to the tummy, women are harder on themselves than men are on women. My mission is to help you achieve your personal best abs, and also to help you love them.waistright

It helps to understand that there are several different reasons why some women develop more pronounced abs than others. It would take several medical books to explain it in detail. Two prominent reasons that abs differ genetically for women has to do with muscle fiber makeup and childbearing. I discuss this in my book ERASE YOUR WAIST (Sourcebooks) should you want more information.

 

To help you with your specific concern of a poor belly image, I am going to give you one of my favorite exercises that I call Tummy Touch Time™!
